This bronze portrait was commissioned as a surprise gift for a rugby legend.
Working from photographs as reference I produced the original in wax.
Viewings for the commissioning family and friends were organised where we could compare the wax with their memories and the photographs. At these viewings the variety of perceptions were discussed and adjustments were made.
The wax original was then invested in bronze.
When doing portraiture it is always a striking fact that we each see things, and particularly faces, very differently. Resolving this fact in a sculpture is probably the most challenging part of this work. |
