The idea of the movement of a shoal of fish through water is the inspiration behind this work.

'Shoal' uses stainless steel rod to create flowing curves in three dimensions. The forms are an iteration of those in my timber pieces but here are now translucent, light, and move through space.

The work takes the eye up through this volume, lightly echoing the upward spiral of the stairs and wall. The design responds to the light and the surrounding materials and finishes which include stainless, glass, marble and polished plaster.

Although this sculpture is inside an apartment, it is close to the water and susceptible to surface corrosion, or 'tea staining'. I therefore chose to use 316 grade stainless steel to make the piece. It was then electropolished to increase its surface brightness and corrosion resistance.

This medium would also be suitable for creating outdoor works.
